Offices and Boardrooms

Acoustics and noise control in typical office environments is often overlooked at the design stage and in many LEED projects it is ignored. However, in terms of User acceptability, poor acoustics often ranks No. 1 or No. 2 on the list of complaints.

In view of this, it is important to consider:

  • Room finishes in both the open plan and cellular office design
  • Party partition and floor/ceiling design in terms of horizontal and vertical noise isolation and impact noise control between floors
  • Room finishes for key areas such as Executive Offices, Boardrooms and any rooms used for Tele-Conferencing or Video-Conferencing
  • Building Services systems noise and vibration control
  • Possible use of electronic sound masking in designs where ambient noise levels may be low such as in buildings using radiant heating or cooling or under-floor ventilation

Acoustics and noise control in all Educational Facilities is critical. In order for a student to learn, information must be presented clearly and in order for this to occur the acoustical environment must be designed accordingly. Room finishes and background noise are key issues in creating the proper learning space. It has been shown that the learning curve drops off dramatically where acoustics and noise control have been ignored. This drop off is even more dramatic where English is a second language or for those students and/or staff who are hearing challenged.

DL&A has extensive experience in architectural acoustics for all building types, including standard office designs, concert halls, film and music studios, libraries and galleries, secondary schools, colleges and universities, hospitals, corporate offices, churches and industrial buildings and operations. His career started in the early 1970's with Barron & Strachan Ltd, then in the 80's as a principal in Harford, Kennedy, Lyzun & Associates (HKL). He later moved on to become a Principal of a new firm, Barron Kennedy Lyzun & Associates (BKL), where he was active in all facets of the operation.

OAP is one of the largest engineering firms the World over with 60 offices operating in 50 different countries and over 6000 employees globally. Of these 6000 individuals, approximately 120 work in the field of acoustics and noise control in 10 OAP offices World wide.
